The fundamental change in the way people are communicating is driving a new services ecosystem which will force significant and bold changes by existing providers who wish to survive.
This is the bold proposal in a recent article in European Communications Magazine.
At the heart of the communications revolution are social networks. According to Forrester, enterprise spending on Web 2.0 collaboration technologies is forecast to grow to US$4.6 billion globally by 2013, with social networking as the top spending in this category.
A number of telcos are already responding to the challenges and opportunities of social networking. Many have initiatives underway including offering online social networking sites and building their own proprietary services.
In addition to open platforms there are opportunities in closed or "walled-garden" models. Telco's have a role to play in the delivery of fully integrated collaborative services to enterprises and organisations that value carrier-grade capabilities in a secure and reliable environment.
Telco's can begin to take advantage of the window of opportunity in mobile social networking and also bolster their capabilities to serve the evolving, broader communications needs of enterprises. They should partner with existing players to proactively develop the capabilities required for success.
